Sec. 36. When a candidate is being prepared to receive the degrees, he shall be asked upon what Holy Writing he would prefer to take his obligation, and if he has made his choice, it must be complied with, placing on the Altar the preferred Holy Writing, even to the extent of obtaining, if he is a Roman Catholic, the Douay version - or if other Christians, the King James version of the Holy Bible.
The phraseology to be used when the candidate is requested to indicate his choice is: -- "As Freemasonry admits to its membership men of all religions who believe in God and a life after death, please choose the Holy Book upon which you prefer to take your obligation, and be reminded, if you are a Christian, that Jesus Christ as mediator is equally essential to your belief".
