INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Only the Master, Wardens, Chaplain, Marshals, Deacons and Stewards take part in the ceremony.

  2. Dark or white clothing should be worn. No insignia are permissible save white aprons and white gloves. The Master should not wear hat.

  3. Music, vocal and instrumental, is absolutely essential to the successful conduct of the Memorial Services.

  4. Lodges of Remembrance are best held in Churches or public halls, where all persons interested can witness the proceedings.

  5. The hall must be draped in black, and the stations particularly marked with badges of mourning.

  6. Between the Altar and West is placed the catafalque which consists of a rectangular platform about 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. On top of it are two smaller platforms, so that three steps are represented. The third one should be an elevation of convenient height. On top of it is placed an urn and a canopy of black drapery may be raised over it. The platform should be draped in black.

  7. At each corner of the platform will be placed a candlestick with lighted taper, and near it facing the East, will be seated a Brother, provided with an extinguisher and match or lighter to be used at the proper time.

  8. On top of the catafalque will be placed a pair of white gloves, a lambskin or white cloth apron, and if the deceased brother had been an officer, the appropriate insignia of his office.

  9. If the Lodge of (Sorrow - Remembrance) is held in memory of several brethren, shields bearing their names are placed around the catafalque.

  10. During the first part of the ceremonies the lights in the hall should burn dimly. Arrangements should be made to enable the lights to be increased to brilliancy at the appropriate point in the ceremony.

  11. Order of Entrance of Officers - (a) Outside, the officers form themselves in procession in two columns, facing the door, in the following order.

SD - Marshal Chap - SS Treas. - Sec. JD - JS SW - JW Master

(b) The officers enter the hall in two columns - Right column headed by the Marshal the left column headed by the SD - the Master at the center end of the columns.

Both columns walk abreast, make a left turn when about three steps from Southwest corner of pavement, then proceed along West. When opposite SW's station, make a right turn and proceed to border of West pavement. On reaching the border of pavement, separate Marshal turns right and SD turns left - followed by officers in their respective columns. Both columns proceed Eastward, right column walks along border of South pavement, and stops at a one-third distance of the pavement, from each other as Marshal stops at the SE corner of pavement.

Meanwhile, officers on left column walk along border of North pavement also keeping in line and stop opposite the officers on right column, as SD stops at NE corner of pavement.

Both columns face inward when Marshal faces in. Master then walks to his station along North side of the Altar. As Master passes each officer, repair to their respective stations and places, but should remain standing until the Master seats them.
